I. Installing Updates

A. Core File Updates

B. Optional File Updates

A. Core File Updates

First: Make sure the PDA is docked and synchronized. This is ensured by noting the Active Sync icon in the lower right tray of the desktop computer. If the little circle with arrows in it is green and the arrows are not turning, the synchronization is complete. Do not attempt to install updates unless this is so.

Second: Make sure Anywhere software is closed down: tap File, then Exit. This is critical to success!!

Now,

1.       Log on to Internet, go to www.anywheremap.com.

2.       Hold your mouse over the blue “Support” button until a menu appears.

3.       Click Downloads.

4.       Enter your Username and Password. They are case-sensitive.

5.       The Download Center page opens and lists the products for which you have valid subscriptions.

6.       If this is your FIRST update of any type for any of our products (Map, Wx, XP, database only, software, or both) you MUST install the Download Manager on your PC. This is a program that manages placement of the files on your PC and/or iPAQ. If you have already installed Download Manager, simply skip to the next step.

a.       Click the Download Manager link at lower right to begin this simple installation.

b.       Follow the prompts and allow everything to work by default. This only takes a few minutes.

Ø Application Software (new versions are usually released quarterly):

This is the main software application, either AnywhereMap or AnywhereWx (which contains AnywhereMap). Only update this if you do not have the latest version.

1.       If you are an AnywhereMap customer, click AnywhereMap to go to the list of AnywhereMap-specific files. If you are an AnywhereWx customer, click on AnywhereWx.

2.       Scroll down the page until you see the section entitled Anywhere (Map, Wx, etc.) Software Updates.

3.       The first item on the list is the most recent, for PDA-type machines such as the HP iPAQ.

4.       Click the Download button at right.

5.       A window appears asking of you want to Run/Open or Save the file. Click Run.

6.       Follow the prompts as the Installation Wizard initiates after the file has been downloaded.

7.       If asked for Username and Password, enter them and remember they’re case sensitive.

8.       At some point you will be asked what location should be used for the installation of files.

a.      Many systems ship with, or customers have added, storage cards that allow files to be stored on them saving valuable main memory space. If you have one, insert it into the PDA and then select that card from the drop down menu.

b.      If you have a system with storage card that was installed and configured by us here at Control Vision, we have used the card for many of the files and you should select it in the installation instead of Main Memory. The Installer knows which files to place where.

c.      If you do not have a storage card, allow the default of Main Memory to remain and click to continue installation.

9.       As the installation progresses, you may be asked for storage locations several times. Please make sure you select the same option each time!

Q If you are a Wx customer, you do not need to update AnywhereMap. It is built into the AnywhereWx software.

Ø 28-Day Aeronautical Database (new versions are released every 28 days):

This is the main aviation database that contains all the airport data, frequencies, navaids, etc. This is updated every 28 days on a regular schedule.

1.       After logging in to the Download Center (or return to the main screen of the Download Center) click on the product for which you are retrieving a database update (i.e. AnywhereMap or AnywhereWx).

2.       Scroll down the page to the section entitled 28-Day Aeronautical Database.

3.       Check at right to verify the current date fits into the range of the valid period on the database file as listed.

4.       Click Download to the right of Western Hemisphere New Format (or Eastern Hemisphere database). NOTE! These are hemispheres, not east and wet halves of the US. The US is included entirely in the Western Hemisphere database.

5.       Click the Run/Open button in the pop up window.

6.       Follow the prompts for all default installation settings.

7.       Apply the same storage card logic as described in the Software section above.

Q After any update is complete, we strongly recommend that you Soft Boot the PDA. Follow the directions below to perform this short but critical procedure.

B. Optional file updates (TFRs, roads, shorelines, etc.)

1.       Log in to the Download Center as above.

2.       Click on the appropriate program type (AnywhereMap or AnywhereWx, for example).

3.       Scroll through the pages and review the various database types that can be installed. You’ll find high-resolution terrain, various shoreline files, and various road databases. You can only have one database file for any type loaded at one time. For example, only one shoreline file can be loaded at any time. So if you live in Florida, install the Eastern Shorelines or the Bahamas to get the greatest detail.

4.       Click on the Download button.

5.       Press Run/Open in the pop up box.

6.       Follow the prompts for all default installation settings.

7.       Repeat for each file you care to install or update.

Q After any update is complete, we strongly recommend that you Soft Boot the PDA. Follow the directions below to perform this short but critical procedure.

II. Installing the Complete System

If your PDA battery has run down, you may find that the Anywhere software no longer resides on the unit. This is because the PDAs memory is “volatile” – in other words, it cannot be maintained unless the batteries have power. There are three ways to restore the operation of the PDA after power loss:

A. Restore from a backup

B. Install from the website

C. Install from the CD

A. Restore from a backup

If you purchased a system from us beginning in the Fall of 2004, we have backed up the entire unit to the internal storage or external storage card. You can simply restore operation by doing the following:

1.       iPAQ 5550:

a.      Tap Start > Programs > iPAQ Backup

b.      There are four tabs at the bottom – one is Restore. Tap it.

c.      You should see the most recent backup file listed by date.

d.      Tap Start to begin system restoration.

e.      After the restore is complete, soft reset the PDA and connect the system components. You should be ready to go!

2.       iPAQ 4700:

a.      Tap Start > Programs > iPAQ Backup

b.      The screen is split horizontally

c.      In the lower half (Restore) you should see the last backup file that was created and its storage location.

d.      Tap Restore.

e.      After restoration, the system will soft reset.

f.        Reconnect your peripherals and start normally.

If you do not have a backup file, you will need to reinstall the entire application and this can be done two ways:

We suggest that if you purchased your system from us in the last few months, installing from the CD is simpler and will then only require an update of the database and perhaps the application version. However, if you have had the system for a while, it is simpler to install the entire application from the website since many of the files on the CD have probably been updated.

B. Installing from the website

First: Make sure all software is closed down. Now soft reset the PDA. This is critical to success!!

Second: Make sure the PDA is docked and synchronized. This is ensured by noting the Active Sync icon in the lower right tray of the desktop computer. If the little circle with arrows in it is green and the arrows are not turning, the synchronization is complete.

This procedure takes place the same way as updates, but covers all the files instead of just those that have been updated. Using the procedures outlined in Section IA above, install the files in the following order:

Anywhere System Installation Checklist

In the Subscriber Downloads Section:

ü

Active Sync: Check that the PDA is in the cradle and synchronized

Download Manager: If current version is newer than the one installed on your PC

AnywhereMap or AnywhereWx Software Updates: depending on which you own.

Your username and password will be required during this installation. Remember, they are case sensitive!

The Aeronautical Database: Western hemisphere or eastern hemisphere

Depending on which you require

In the Public Downloads Section:

SFR file: TFR and SFR items, updated 3x daily, best to update before you fly

Miscellaneous:

Stadiums and Nukes (TFR no-fly or no-loiter items)

US State Lines

AnywhereWx Phone Connection Settings (Wx customers only)

Airport Diagrams (optional, requires about 25 Mb of space)

Roads: Select one file to install from the list

City: For US, you can install both US Cities and US Urban Areas, other countries only one

Water: Select one file to install from the list

Terrain: Select either US Terrain or Eastern Terrain for the eastern hemisphere

C. Installing from CD

1. Insert the AnywhereMap or AnywhereWx CD in the CD drive of your desktop computer.

2. Follow the prompts for installation. Other than asking for your username and password, this process is basically automatic.

Once completed, you may need to update the software application or the database since the versions on the CD may have been replaced with newer versions. To do this, use the procedures in Section I.

III. Soft Booting the PDA:

Q NOTE: The iPAQs operating system is slightly different from the desktop computer even though they are both “Windows”. The primary difference is that when you click the X in the upper-right corner of the application on the PDA, the application is only MINIMIZED it is not closed. On the PC, this would actually close the program. Therefore, many different applications can be running on the PDA even though you cannot see them. The best way to close them and ensure a clean operation of AnywhereMap, is to close AnywhereMap, then soft boot the PDA. Please see instructions below for Soft Booting.

IPAQ models 36xx, 37xx, 38xx, 39xx, 54xx, and 55xx

1. Close down AnywhereMap by tapping File, then Exit.

2. Locate the small hole on the bottom (not back) of the iPAQ case, just to the right of the elongated slot.

3. Gently push the tip of the stylus into this hole to feel a slight click. To avoid a hard reset, do not hold it in.

4. The soft boot process completes automatically.

5. Once the main screen appears, start AnywhereMap.

IPAQ models 22xx

1. Close down AnywhereMap by tapping File, then Exit.

2. Locate the small hole on the back of the iPAQ case, near the lower left corner.

3. Gently push the tip of the stylus into this hole to feel a slight click.

4. The soft boot process completes automatically.

5. Once the main screen appears, start AnywhereMap.

IPAQ models 47xx

1. Close down AnywhereMap by tapping File, then Exit.

2. Locate the small hole on the bottom (not back) of the iPAQ case, left of the battery lock switch.

3. Gently push the tip of the stylus into this hole to feel a slight click.

4. The soft boot process completes automatically.

5. Once the main screen appears, start AnywhereMap.

Problem

Solution

My firewall is prohibiting me from downloading the new application file.

We strongly recommend you temporarily disable the firewall or make www.anywheremap.com an allowed-site for the firewall.

My anti-virus software is prohibiting me from downloading the application software.

We strongly recommend you temporarily disable the anti-virus software for the short time you’re updating Anywhere software.

My iPAQ does not connect to the PC

This is a problem with Active Sync. It may just be a configuration issue or you may need an update. Active Sync documentation can be found on the CD that came with your PDA. Updated version of Active Sync can be retrieved directly from Microsoft’s website. DO NOT install Active Sync version 3.7.1!!
